Residential Health Care

The private healthcare industry is booming, with residential care home groups, independent nursing homes and private hospital groups offering quality care services as the National Health Service continues to struggle to cope with the demands placed on it.

Due to advances in medical care, healthier lifestyles and declining birth rates, the UK population is getting older. There are now 11.4 million people in the UK aged 65 or over (17.7% of the total population). This is projected to increase by a massive 50% over the next 17 years to over 16 million (23.5% of the UK’s population by 2034). By 2086, about one in three people in the UK will be over 60.

As life expectancy increases, so too will the pressure to dramatically increase the number of care home beds if we are to offer continuing specialist care for our aging population. Given that dementia is one of the main causes of disability in later life, this increase in life expectancy will dramatically increase the demand for care home beds. In 2014, an estimated 850,000 people in the UK suffered from dementia, the majority of whom were aged 65 years or over. By 2025, this is expected to rise to 1.14 million and to exceed 2 million by 2051.

Currently, there are an estimated 5,153 nursing homes and 12,525 residential homes in the UK with a market value of c. £14billion. 426,000 elderly and disabled people are currently in residential care (including nursing), approximately 405,000 of who are aged 65+. Official statistics estimate that the demand for care home places will double in the next 20 years.

RP Adam views the residential care market as it does the hotel market – where paying customers deserve value for money and a positive guest experience. With many care home fees on par with five star hotels rates, the cost of good quality care is certainly not cheap, and the quality and cleanliness of the surroundings are critically important in enhancing each resident’s “guest experience” and providing peace of mind for their families. These residential homes are busy, with occupancy rates of over 80% compared to the average UK hotels market of 70%.

It goes without saying that our elderly in-care deserves a comfortable and clean environment. At RP Adam, we have been supplying the care and nursing home market for many years offering leading operators a range of commercial packages including cost-per-resident-per-day fees and case rate pricing. This is one market which demands a consistent and highly responsive level of after-sales service, to which RP Adam is renowned for.

We also provide a variety of speciality products and services that help ensure a comfortable and clean environment for residents/patients, and offer operators a range of commercial packages including cost-per-resident-per-day fees and case rate pricing.

The care home sector is the biggest on-premises laundry market in the UK. The sector has two distinct types of home – Residential (care) and Nursing (clinical) – each of which with very different laundry challenges. In a residential care home, the guests, despite their age, are still independent and their washing needs are not much different from any normal domestic laundry. In a nursing care home, however, residents are more likely to have high dependency requirements, often resulting in greater laundry problems – incontinence being an obvious example. Irrespective of the type of care home, the OPL will normally launder personal clothing, sheets, duvets, pillows and towels – it is just the scale of the laundry challenge that will differ.

A particular area of expertise in these sectors is the provision of cost efficient solutions for the effective management of commercial on-premises laundries. Please see our recent series of blog ‘Professional Laundry’ articles and free to download e-book providing ‘best practice’ advice to customers and partners covering effective commercial laundry management.
